A Southern California community says it will build almost 1,000 solar carports at a commuter rail station to produce electricity and charge electric vehicles.

The carports at the Metrolink station parking lot in the City of Industry will have photovoltaicsolar roof panels to provide about 2 megawatts of power for Southern California Edison, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported Sunday.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have developed a gold plated window as the transparent electrode for organic solar cells. Contrary to what one might expect, these electrodes have the potential to be relatively cheap since the thickness of gold used is only 8 billionths of a metre.

This ultra-low thickness means that even at the current high gold price the cost of the gold needed to fabricate one square metre of this electrode is only around 4.5 pounds. It can also be readily recouped from the organic solar cell at the end of its life and since gold is already widely used to form reliable interconnects it is no stranger to the electronics industry.

Google said Monday it has invested $168 million to help complete the construction of one of the world's biggest solar energy power plants in California's Mojave Desert.

The plant, which is being developed by BrightSource Energy, will generate 392 gross megawatts (MW) of clean solar energy when it is completed in 2013, enough to supply power to 85,000 homes a year.

A norueguesa Statoil começou a produzir petróleo e gás no campo Peregrino, na bacia de Campos, no sábado. A produção deve alcançar 12 mil barris/dia ao longo desta semana e outros três poços serão conectados, um por semana, até o próximo mês. A empresa planeja chegar ao fim do ano produzindo 100 mil barris no país. "É um dia muito importante para a Statoil no Brasil. Peregrino é o maior projeto em produção tendo a empresa como operadora fora da Noruega", comemora o presidente da empresa no país, Kjetil Hove.
