Está ancorado na Baía de Guanabara, no Rio de Janeiro, o navio Vale Brasil, encomendado pela Vale ao estaleiro Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co, na Coreia do Sul. Trata-se do maior navio mineraleiro do mundo, com capacidade de 400 mil toneladas, 362 metros de comprimento e 65 metros de largura. O Vale Brasil é o primeiro mineraleiro de uma encomenda de sete navios da Vale ao estaleiro coreano, que totaliza investimento de US$ 748 milhões. A Vale possui ainda encomenda de 12 navios com capacidade de 400 mil toneladas ao estaleiro Rongsheng Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries, na China. Os navios em construção no estaleiro chinês somam um investimento de US$ 1,6 bilhão.

Facebook Now Pays Users 10 Cents To Watch Certain Ads


Facebook introduced a program Thursday that offers consumers a financial incentive to watch ads on the site.

Facebook will now reward users who watch certain ads with Facebook Credits, which can be redeemed to purchase goods on Facebook Deals, the company’s new Groupon-like daily deals service. The incentive, however, is not huge. Initially, the average ad will yield one credit, which is equivalent to 10 cents.

The ads will mostly be in games. CrowdStar, Digital Chocolate and Zynga are among the participating game publishers. Facebook is working with Sharethrough, SocialVibe, Epic Media and SupersonicAds to serve ads on the program as well as TrialPay, which will provide analytics.

Dan Greenberg, CEO of Sharethrough, says Facebook’s move represents “a step away from interruptive advertising.” Greenberg, whose clients include Microsoft and Nestle, says his network won’t deliver traditional advertising but rather branded entertainment, which consumers will want to watch and share with friends.

Incentivizing consumers to watch ads is one solution for Facebook’s low banner click-through rates. The move comes after Facebook expanded its Credits program last week to let consumers use the Credits to buy real-world goods advertised in Deals. Previously, the credits, which were awarded for consumers who signed up for various programs (like magazine subscriptions) or bought outright could only buy virtual goods

Scientists have engineered a cheap, abundant alternative to the expensive platinum catalyst and coupled it with a light-absorbing electrode to make hydrogen fuel from sunlight and water.

The discovery is an important development in the worldwide effort to mimic the way plants make fuel from sunlight, a key step in creating a greenenergy economy. It was reported last week in Nature Materials by theorist Jens Norskov of the Department ofEnergy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University and a team of colleagues led by Ib Chorkendorff and Soren Dahl at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Trina Solar Limited (TSL) has announced through its subsidiary, Changzhou Trina Solar Energy Co. Ltd., the signing of a three year research agreement with the Australian National University ("ANU").

The joint research and development agreement is expected to receive more than AUD3 million funding from the Australian Solar Institute ("ASI"). The ASI is part of the Australian Government's Clean Energy Initiative and aims to promote and support new innovative research ideas.

United Solar has announced through its joint venture in UnitedSolar Ovonic Jinneng Limited, a project to supply 565kW UNI-SOLAR brand photovoltaic (PV) solar laminates for the solarpower system on the roof of the Tianjin West Railway Station in Tianjin, P.R. China.

"I am pleased to see that the solar PV product of the joint venture between United Solar and us will be installed on the Tianjin West Railway Station," said Jianping Wang, Chairman of United Solar Ovonic Jinneng Limited. "This project will demonstrate the unique characteristics of our joint venture's flexible thin-film modules in the Chinese PV market."

Valorização de preço do minério deve sustentar resultados da Vale

Mineração e metalurgia: Analistas esperam lucro por volta de R$ 8 bilhões no primeiro trimestre.

A Vale divulga hoje o balanço do primeiro trimestre de 2011, logo após o fechamento do mercado, com resultados ligeiramente abaixo do trimestre anterior, mas muito acima dos números do mesmo período de 2010. As projeções de analistas apontam para um lucro no patamar de R$ 8 bilhões, abaixo dos R$ 10 bilhões do último trimestre do ano, mas quase 200% acima dos R$ 2,8 bilhões no mesmo período de 2010.

Max Bueno, analista de mineração da corretora Spinelli, prevê a alta dos preços de ferrosos e metais vendidos pela Vale como o motor do bom resultado que a mineradora deve apresentar neste início do ano, compensando um volume menor de embarques devido à concentração de chuvas no norte do país no período e a valorização do real.

O preço médio do minério de ferro no mercado à vista chinês alcançou o patamar de US$ 150 a tonelada. O preço médio de venda da Vale saltou de US$ 122 no ultimo trimestre de 2010 para US$ 132 a tonelada. O níquel, segunda maior receita da Vale, subiu 14,75% e 36,1% ante o quarto trimestre e o primeiro de 2010, respectivamente.
