President Barack Obama promised federal aid Friday to the tornado-ravaged U.S. South, where deadly twisters have killed at least 328 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.

A cooperação entre a Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana e a Igreja Cristã Ortodoxa Russa afigura-se bastante alvissareira para a preservação das raízes cristãs da Europa – declarou o cardeal Tarcisio Bertone, secretário do Estado da Santa Sé, em entrevista à mídia italiana. Durante o papado de Bento XVI, sucessos de João Paulo II, o Patriarcado de Moscou e o Vaticano estão demonstrando harmonia e concórdia, mormente nas questões sociais e étnicas – declarou o cardeal. O segundo dirigente mais importante da hierarquia do Vaticano crê que isso proporciona um espaço para colaboração e para lançar ao mundo apelos eficientes e ricos em conteúdo. O alto dignitário dedicou seu discurso à herança de João Paulo II cuja beatificação, ou seja, proclamação de bem-aventurado está sendo preparada pelo mundo católico.

TVA: Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant

Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant is on the north shore of Wheeler Reservoir in north Alabama. It was TVA’s first nuclear power plant, and the largest in the world when it began operation in 1974. It was the first nuclear plant in the world to generate more than 1 billion watts of power.

The three operating units at Browns Ferry are boiling water nuclear reactors. They make electricity by splitting uranium atoms to produce steam. The steam is piped to turbines, which spin a generator to produce electricity.

Once the steam leaves the turbines it is cooled in an area called a condenser and changes back to water. The water is pumped back to the reactor to begin the process again.

WASHINGTON--Since the deadly tornadoes first struck parts of the country earlier this week, the federal government has been in constant contact with all of the impacted states as they responded to and began recovery efforts from these devastating storms.
Yesterday, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate joined the President and the First Lady in Alabama to tour damaged areas and to meet with Governor Robert Bentley and other state and local officials and families affected by the devastation. FEMA's Deputy Administrator Rich Serino was on the ground with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal on Thursday, and was in Mississippi with Governor Haley Barbour yesterday.
Tomorrow, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Administrator Fugate, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Small Business Administration Administrator Karen Mills will join state and local officials on the ground in Alabama and Mississippi to survey the damage and recovery efforts underway. More details on that trip will be released today.

Oregon Public Health reports minimal health risk from trace radiation from Japan

The Oregon Public Health Division and the Environmental Protection Agency continue to track levels of radiation linked to the nuclear power plant event in Japan. There is no public health risk due to the trace levels of radiation from Japan. The levels of radiation have been steadily decreasing.

30 cases of radiation contamination detected in China

China has detected 30 cases of radioactive contamination in people, vessels and containers that have entered the country since radiation leaks started at the crippled Japanese nuclear power plant on March 16, Chinese authorities said Friday.
The contamination cases were reported after China's quarantine bureaus started to monitor radiation levels at nine entry ports including Beijing, Liaoning and Zhejiang, said Li Yuanping, a spokesman for the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

This sounds ominous. Japan's nuclear safety agency ordered the power utility in charge of the stricken nuclear plants to review its radiation measurements, saying it seems suspiciously high. Tokyo Electric Power has repeatedly had to take back its radiation figures after announcing them to be alarmingly high, sapping confidence in the company's ability to handle the crisis. The latest radiation figure showed that groundwater under one of the reactors contained iodine concentrations 10,000 times the government standard. Tepco says the high number seems to be the result of a glitch in its computer program—but also that it might be correct. If it's accurate, there's a chance the radiation could leak into wells or waterways, but experts say it's more likely it would seep into the ocean and disperse.

Radiation from Japan has been detected in drinking water in 13 more American cities, and cesium-137 has been found in American milk—in Montpelier, Vermont—for the first time since the Japan nuclear disaster began, according to data released by the Environmental Protection Agency late Friday.

Milk samples from Phoenix and Los Angeles contained iodine-131 at levels roughly equal to the maximum contaminant level permitted by EPA, the data shows. The Phoenix sample contained 3.2 picoCuries per liter of iodine-131. The Los Angeles sample contained 2.9. The EPA maximum contaminant level is 3.0, but this is a conservative standard designed to minimize exposure over a lifetime, so EPA does not consider these levels to pose a health threat.
