Infantry school leaders seek more female CIs

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — All female Marines are trained in common combat skills here at School of Infantry East and, since 2008, have had the benefit of female combat instructors as role models.

Leaders view the female instructors as a critical new addition and say more are needed.

“All instructors train all [new Marines], but you want to have at least one female Marine per company because that gives those female Marines someone to look up to and idolize,” said Gunnery Sgt. Jody Armentrout, the school’s chief instructor.

Staff Sgt. Marcella Mejia became a combat instructor in September 2009 and said she has learned more and had more fun than she would have in her primary job as a court stenographer.

The last time she touched a machine gun, she said, was as a new Marine in Marine Combat Training at the School of Infantry, where she now teaches.

“As non-infantry, we don’t have the opportunity to do that stuff. We’re stuck in an office and don’t get to do stuff on the ranges and with guns,” said Mejia, who joined the Corps in 1999.
